The Standard Wheelchair is a type of Manual Wheelchair that is characterized by a cross-brace frame, which allows the wheelchair to fold, built-in or removable arm rests, swing-away footrests, a mid to high-level back, and push handles to allow someone other than the user to propel the Wheelchair. Standard manual wheelchairs consist of two large rear wheels that are usually 20"-26" with push rims and two small wheels in the front, also known as casters. Factors to Consider When Purchasing A Standard Wheelchair

  • Build and Shape of User Standard Wheelchairs typically hold a certain amount of weight, and it is crucial to consider this aspect when choosing which wheelchair is right for an individual. Also, Standard Wheelchairs are lighter in weight, making it more convenient for individuals who travel frequently and need a compact chair to fit into the car.
  • Medical Needs: Standard Wheelchairs are manual, so if a user has disabilities that make them lack in strength, Standard Wheelchairs will most likely not be the best fit for them.
  • Lifestyle and Habits: Lifestyle is an important aspect to keep into consideration when looking into Standard Wheelchairs. If a user only needs the chair for transportation and to use for short periods of time, a Standard Wheelchair could be the best option. However, if the user is looking for long term, full use, a Standard Wheelchair may not be the best fit.
  • Preference: Users have an option to choose whether they would like a manual chair, which gives them complete control over their direction, or if they would like to have a companion with them to push their chair. For those users who prefer to have a companion with them, a Standard Wheelchair is best fit and fulfills what they are looking for.
